I'm new to radio being on the air for a little over a year here in South Eastern CT. I love all radio and it's what I've always wanted to work in, although it's been a struggle. What have been your favorite stations to work at and what are your favorite stations nation-wide as a listener? I'm wondering where a good place to target would be too. Thanks in advance, Jim

I don't know if I'm the best person to ask this of only because a lot of the stations that I've worked at have been part-time and/or weekend jobs, so I don't know how the day to day 9-5 situation is. My fav station that I worked at during business hours was probably the first station that I really worked at - WRCN-FM on Long Island. They were a Mom & Pop back then, played cool new rock, and was staffed by a great bunch of people. Favorite p/t jobs were probably WCEM "The Heat" because they gave me total freedom to be me on the air. Small market radio can definately be fun, but the pay just isn't there. My favorite stations to listen to are the one that I work at (WZBA "100.7 The Bay"), WRNR-FM in Annapolis/Baltimore is a great station, Baltimore's 98 Rock for the heavy stuff, WBAB back on Long Island has great jocks and basically IS Long Island, WHOG "the Hog" in Daytona is what I listen to when I'm down tere every year for a good presentation of Classic Rock, "Ocean 98" WOCM-98.1 in Ocean City MD is another really cool station for stuff that isn't on other stations with a great local touch. WEHM out in The Hamptons (NY) is/was a great AAA station the last time that I was out that way, but it's been over a year, so I don't know anymore.
For starting out as an on-air guy try and get into a fringe-market station. That's a station that is really close to a large market, but not really in it. The larger stations often hire up from those types of stations from my experience. It's a lot easier to move up than working in a very middle of nowhere station. Just my $0.02 - better to start at a small station in a large-ish market or finge than a monster in the boonies. I hope taht this helps.

I love "The Bay". Thanks for playing Nugent last week for me. Nobody else answers the phone but you.

I miss HFS. The real 99.1 HFS, not the talk station using the name on 105.7. They were great for hearing the new stuff. 98 Rock sucks bad. Way too much trying to be funny and way too much trailer park trash rock. I listen to DC101 over 98 Rock any day for new stuff. I can't get WRNR except in the car sometimes, but when it comes in I like it. Depending on the time of day, Towson's station WTMD is very good. Sometimes they get too wimpy with the acoustic stuff though. The Bay is the place for the classic tunes without a doubt though.
